Ronald Reagon on Unions

Of course, as with many things, what he said and what he did were two different things. Reagan's legacy is confusing in that way, though I very often agree with what he said, especially about small government.

Another confusing legacy?

"All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters."

-FDR

It is interesting that some of the most ardent anti-New Deal conservatives have been parroting the New Deal's champion so often lately.

CTL-- I know! It's weird the way the arguments have been going all different ways.

I always worry when a solution is pushed which does not seem to relate very much to the problem.

Such a nice looking young man. Too bad he wasn't a better actor.

ps ~ I volunteered at the 1980 RNC in Detroit.

Reagan is rarely given enough credit for his intelligence, and he was also an outstanding public speaker. This is a good example of both.

I take it back - he was a very good actor.

ps. Can we get spell checker on the Razor?
