Does Excitement Matter?

I was talking yesterday to a friend whose political opinions I very much respect. He's a Republican, so we often have different perspectives, but was we talked about the presidential race we seemed to agree on a lot of things.

One of them was the shared perception that the two candidates many people believe will be the ultimate nominees-- Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush-- share the same challenge: People (other than those with a personal interest in their campaigns) aren't very excited about either one. That should be important, since our leaders should inspire us.

Let's take a look at that. Clearly, there are two candidates that are generating real excitement among a significant part of their party's membership:

Sanders
Trump

Others have fervent followers in a smaller segment of the party:

Paul
Carson
Fiorina
Kasich
Rubio
Huckabee

Others are just unloved because they are ignored:

Gilmore
Christie
Chafee
O'Malley
Perry

And this guy, people just loath:

Jindal

Comments:
The Rs have been working to destroy interest in Hilary for the last 14 years, ever since she moved out of the White House and began her campaign for the Senate. And she has foolishly done things that can be reinterpreted by them, like the private email server, to make her vulnerable to their attacks.

Waco Friend--

I think more important than any of that has been Clinton's conservative campaign strategy, where she speaks only to carefully selected groups in controlled settings. It's like a football team starting the game with a prevent defense. She will do well in debates, and that may save her, but she isn't doing what she needs to do to get anyone excited.

Playing not to lose is no way to win.

As ridiculous as Trump is a political candidate, his candor and impolitic remarks serve to point out just how ridiculous all the professional politicians seem to be with their well measured, lifeless, and "company line" responses to every question put to them. There is no excitement in the candidates because they bring nothing to the table, but the same old slop. Buffoons or liars seem to be a voter's only choice. How far we have fallen.

Waco - you are right - she isn't getting me excited. She is just the best option of a large group of career politicians.
